"Armageddon" (mount of destruction) symbolical

The Valley of Jezreel in its widest extent stretches from the Mediterranean to the Jordan, west and east, and on the north from the mountains of Galilee to Mt. Carmel and the mountains of Ephraim on the south.

This valley was the scene of great battles, all of which Scripturally type symbolic battles occurring in the end of the Gospel Age; hence it symbolizes warfare. In fact this valley was a thoroughfare for Egypt, Assyria and Babylon, when marching to war against one another.

Let us look at some of the battles fought in this valley, whose westerly exit to the south was at Megiddo, whose mountain sides gave it the name of Armageddon (mount of destruction.), symbolical of the great conflict with which this Age ends (Rev. 16: 14 16). The battles fought here represent the conflicts between truth and error, right and wrong, liberty and tyranny, in the end of this Age. In this valley the army of Barak met and defeated the immensely larger and better equipped host of Jabin under Sisera's command; symbolical of the Lord's Harvest warriors under that Servant as antitypical Barak meeting and defeating in a battle between truth and error the armies of Romanist and Protestant sectarianism (Judg. 4: 5). In this valley Gideon with his 300 confounded the host of 135,000 Midianites, etc. (Judg. 8: 10), representing how God's faithful Truth warriors in the end of this Age in debate defeated the advocates of the claims as to the Divine right of king's and the Divine right of democracies (Judg. 6-8). In this valley the Philistines met and defeated Saul and his Israelitish army, typical of the controversy between the Modernists and the Fundamentalists, in which the latter
Page 45-C2
have suffered a disastrous defeat in the field of religious controversy from the former (1 Sam. 31; 1 Chro. 10). In this valley occurred the conflict between Jehu, on the one hand, and Jehoram of Israel and Ahaziah, on the other, resulting in the death of Jehoram and Ahaziah, the latter's death occurring at Megiddo (Armageddon, 2 Kings 9: 1-28; 2 Chro. 22: 1-9), typical of the Battle of Armageddon, in which Conservative Labor will overthrow European Reactionism and American Autocracy in a worldwide revolution, which will overthrow Satan's empire in state, church and capital. Here, too, occurred the battle between Josiah and Pharaoh-nechoh, wherein the latter overthrew the former (2 Kings 23: 28-30; 2 Chro. 35:20-27), pictorial of the conflict between the orthodox evangelistic movement and Satan working through the combinationists, who utterly routed the former movement. Thus the Valley of Jezreel and its battles, symbolizing the fore said things, corroborate the thought that the Bible is a Divine Revelation.

ZECHARIAH 14 HAS BEEN FULFILLED Has It Not? Or Did We Miss It?

Dear Friend,

Most people think Zechariah 14 and THE DIVIDING OF JERUSALEM is yet future. My study indicates previous fulfillment. I believe it is past. It may yet be a partial fulfillment with more to follow, yet I suggest it may need no further fulfillment than what has already been demonstrably witnessed from 1948-1967 and up until our day.

Yours in Truth,

Division between Jordan and Israel (1948–1967)[edit]

See also: Jordanian occupation of the West Bank

The United Nations proposed, in its 1947 plan for the partition of Palestine, for Jerusalem to be a city under international administration. The city was to be completely surrounded by the Arab state, with only a highway to connect international Jerusalem to the Jewish state.

Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Jerusalem was divided. The Western half of the New City became part of the newly formed state of Israel, while the eastern half, along with the Old City, was annexed by Jordan.

According to David Guinn,

Concerning Jewish holy sites, Jordan breached its commitment to appoint a committee to discuss, among other topics, free access of Jews to the holy sites under its jurisdiction, mainly in the Western Wall and the important Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives, as provided in the Article 8.2 of the Cease Fire Agreement between it and Israel dated April 3, 1949. Jordan permitted the paving of new roads in the cemetery, and tombstones were used for paving in Jordanian army camps. The Cave of Shimon the Just became a stable. [49]

According to Gerald M. Steinberg, Jordan ransacked 57 ancient synagogues, libraries and centers of religious study in the Old City Of Jerusalem, 12 were totally and deliberately destroyed. Those that remained standing were defaced, used for housing of both people and animals. Appeals were made to the United Nations and in the international community to declare the Old City to be an 'open city' and stop this destruction, but there was no response.[50] (See also Hurva Synagogue)

David Guinn notes,
Similar to Jordan's treatment of Jewish holy sites, numerous Muslim holy sites (mosques and cemeteries) under Israeli rule in West Jerusalem fell into disuse and suffered from neglect. Some were destroyed due to Israeli development projects. For example, the Muslim cemetery in Mamilla area was damaged due to the construction of Independence Park in the center of Jerusalem ... [O]ne justification that was offered [for the increasing demolition of mosques] was to "[spare] Arab citizens sorrow ...".[49]

On January 23, 1950, the Knesset passed a resolution that stated Jerusalem was the capital of Israel.[51] It is also the largest city in the country.

Jordan’s Shameful Record

As recently as the mid-20th century, when Arabs last controlled parts of Jerusalem, they exhibited no respect for the Holy City.

In 1948, when Jordan took control of the eastern part of Jerusalem, including the Old City, it divided the city for the first time in its 3,000-year history. Under the 1949 armistice agreement with Israel, Jordan pledged to allow free access to all holy places but failed to honor that commitment. From 1948 until the Six-Day War in 1967, the part of Jerusalem controlled by the Jordanians again became an isolated and underdeveloped provincial town, and its religious sites the target of religious intolerance.

The Old City was rendered void of Jews. Jewish sites such as the Mount of Olives were desecrated. Jordan destroyed more than 50 synagogues15, and erased all evidence of a Jewish presence. In addition, all Jews were forced out of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City adjacent to the Western Wall, an area where Jews had lived for generations.

.... When Israel reunited Jerusalem after the 1967 Six-Day War, one of its first acts was to grant unprecedented freedom to all religions

Israel reunited Jerusalem as one city in 1967, after Jordan joined the Egyptian and Syrian war offensive and shelled the Jewish part of Jerusalem. Israeli leaders vowed the city would never again be divided."

from http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/Jerusalem.html#1
In May 1948, Jordan invaded [emphasis RB] and occupied east Jerusalem, dividing the city for the first time in its history, and driving thousands of Jews — whose families had lived in the city for centuries — into exile. For the next 19 years, the city was split, with Israel establishing its capital in westernJerusalem and Jordan occupying the eastern section, which included the Old City and most religious shrines....

From 1948-67, the city was divided between Israel and Jordan. Israel made western Jerusalem its capital; Jordan occupied the eastern section. Because Jordan — like all the Arab states at the time — maintained a state of war with Israel, the city became, in essence, two armed camps, replete with concrete walls and bunkers, barbed-wire fences, minefields and other military fortifications.

...

Jerusalem is Unified

In 1967, Jordan ignored Israeli pleas to stay out of the Six-Day War and attacked the western part of the city. The Jordanians were routed by Israeli forces and driven out of east Jerusalem, allowing the city's unity to be restored. Teddy Kollek, Jerusalem’s mayor for 28 years, called the reunification of the city “the practical realization of the Zionist movement's goals.” Before 1967, Israeli Jerusalem was 9,500 acres. Israel captured and annexed 1,500 acres held by Jordan and another 16,000 acres from 28 villages surrounding the city. In the 1990s, additional territory in the western part of the city was also annexed. Today Jerusalem is Israel’s largest city. It is approximately 49 square miles (31,500 acres). The Old City population numbered 23,700 in 1967. In 2006, the total had grown to 36,000 — 73% of the inhabitants are Muslim, 18% Christian and 8% are Jewish.

Zechariah 14
American Standard Version

1Behold, a day of Jehovah cometh, when thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

"Day of Jehovah" 1000 yr. judgment, millennial day...
Isaiah 9:3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased its joy; they rejoice before thee as with joy at the harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Ezek 38: 11 and thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates;

12 to take the spoil and to take the prey; to turn thy hand against the waste places that are now inhabited, and against the people that are gathered out of the nations, that have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the middle of the earth.

2For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

1948: the city was "taken", but then half was re-taken by Israel, remaining divided.
half was off limits, barbed wire no man's zone between...
"houses rifled" was literal, figurative. "women ravished" was literal, figurative (synagogues destroyed, desecrated)
"residue of the people...not cut off" - Jordanian agreement to allow free access to Holy sites, but didn't abide by it.

3Then shall Jehovah go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

11And men shall dwell therein, and there shall be no more curse; but Jerusalem shall dwell safely.

From Bro. Paul Johnson E02 142

Satan will, after the Anarchy, attempt but one final effort against God's people, and that not against His spiritual, but against His fleshly Israel.

HE 1924 The tenth and final Divine purpose of the Gospel Age is Israel's conversion to Christ and return to Palestine as a nation. From the fact that the Great Company, while in the flesh, will be the instruments of Israel's conversion (Cant. 5: 6—6: 1), from the fact that the latter's conversion occurs in the time of trouble—the Epiphany—(Zech. 12: 9-14) and from the fact that it is to be gradually wrought onward from the time the fullness of the Gentiles probationally would come in—the Spring of 1878 (Rom. 11: 25), we infer that Israel's national conversion is pre-millennial, and therefore a work of the Parousia and Epiphany of our Lord. In 1878 both aspects of the tenth purpose of the Gospel Age—Israel's conversion to Christ and return to Palestine as a nation— had their beginnings. In April 1878, Delitzsch's Hebrew translation of the New Testament began its work among the Jews, and in June 1878 the Berlin Congress of Nations made Israel's return to, and favorable conditions in, Palestine a matter of international law...

...As they increasingly return, they will quickly build up the country and make it enormously wealthy, which will excite the covetousness of the anarchistic remnants of European, Asiatic and African nations (Ezek. 38: 10-13, 1-9, 14—39: 29). These will bring upon them Jacob's trouble (Jer. 30: 4-8)—the last dregs of Israel's cup of woe. But our Lord will give them such a signal deliverance (Ezek. 38: 18—39: 29), which will be foretold to them by the Great Company whose teachings and preachings will then sink so deep into Israel's heart, that as one man they will turn to the Lord (Zech. 12: 9-13); and the Holy Land will thenceforth be undisputedly theirs. Thus as a nation in their homeland, converted to Christ, they will be the nucleus of the world of mankind, fitted for and waiting to receive the earthly phase of the Millennial Page 39-C2 Kingdom which first is to be set up in their midst. Thus will the Lord with His tenth Gospel Age purpose complete the purposes of the Gospel Age— ...

A REVIEW OF THE JEWISH SITUATION

“JACOB’S TROUBLE”

In the extreme end of this Age the Scriptures describe what is termed “Jacob’s Trouble” (Jer. 30:7) – the last spasm of woe before the Messianic Kingdom is inaugurated under the leadership of the Ancient Worthies. This is graphically predicted in Zech. 14:1-3: “Behold, the day of the lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the Lord go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle.” The Invaders will probably be the marauding hordes from the nations round about – nations devastated by years of conflict, crop failures and pestilence, who will view with a jealous grasping eye the excellent results of Jewish effort. The “unwalled villages” (Eze. 38:11) will seem an easy prey for them, as they fail to reckon with the hand of the Lord in Palestine’s restoration. But, just as success seems within easy grasp for the invaders, the Prophet states the “Lord shall fight against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle” – as He fought for Moses, for Joshua, for Gideon, for David, etc.

This future prospect we can but view through a glass darkly; thus it would probably be folly to attempt to offer details now. [emphasis RCB] However, to our readers the question may properly arise: What, then, should be our attitude toward Jewry at this time? Our answer would be that we should attempt to follow out the counsel of the Lord that He recorded for us some three thousand years ago: “Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem ... that her iniquity is pardoned.” (Isa. 40:2) Even though it may not yet be the “due time” for them to “look upon Him whom they pierced, and to mourn because of it” (Zech. 12:10), yet we may minister to them “a cup of cold water,” to strengthen them in their present difficulties. As Brother Russell properly observed, all who take this attitude will not lose their reward.

We recognize there is still trouble ahead for them – “even Jacob’s trouble” but that will accomplish God’s purposes in all of them who are of “the faith of Abraham.” And it would seem that this class is the controlling body there now, as they have only one Jewish sect in Jerusalem at this time – the orthodox, those who in faith look for “the consolation of Israel.” The various modernist divisions of Jews among the nations are not controlling the religious policies there. But whatever of “comfort” we may extend to them, we should yet bear in mind that this is not our chief work at this time; it is merely a helping hand – “doing good unto all men as ye have opportunity.” The Jehovah’s Witnesses, however, now take the opposite view. ...

Israeli Defense Forces: 17 Miraculous Israeli Military Victories (May 2015)

The Battle of Mishmar HaEmek

On April 4th 1948, the odds were not in Israel’s favor. Outnumbered ten to three and with artillery shells raining down on them, a few hundred Jewish residents and soldiers managed to hold off about one thousand troops of the Arab Liberation Army. The Arabs had attacked the kibbutz,Mishmar Haemek, with the intent of taking it for the strategic location in between Jenin and Haifa. All hope seemed lost, yet surrender was not acceptable. Miraculously, the highly outnumbered Jewish forces managed to go on the offensive, successfully taking over the Arab villages surrounding the kibbutz. This attack led to the Arab Liberation Army’s retreat and was the last significant stand of the Arab Liberation Front in the Israeli War of Independence.... see link for all 17

One Miracle Among Many

While stories abound of miracles that took place during Israel’s War of Independence, one story sticks out. It is referred to as the Battle of Netanyahu. (The definition of the Hebrew word netanyahu is “God has given.)

As soon as Israel declared independence on May 15, 1948, she found herself in an untenable situation. The new state was populated almost entirely by war refugees and possessed no means of protection. With no army and no weapons, she was a sitting duck. According to legend, the fledgling nation possessed approximately five machine guns with about fifteen rounds of ammunition and one tank.

Miraculous Ingenuity

As if to give Israel a false sense of hope, the surrounding Arab nations did not attack immediately. They planned a major offensive against Israel for the eighth day after declaration of statehood. However, the Israelis, understanding that their very lives were yet again on the line, came up with a plan that they hoped would at least buy them some time to prepare for war. On May 23, at midnight, they lined up cars, trucks, taxis, and anything they could find with an engine, side by side along the beaches from Tel Aviv through Netanya and Haifa. They then removed the exhaust pipes from the vehicles, making them sound much louder.

They then loaded large oil drums with rocks and took them to the top of the adjacent hill. When the time was right, early in the morning, the signal was given and the engines were started while the oil drums were rolled down the hill.

The unsuspecting Arab forces were suddenly awakened by the incredible noise, which completely shook the area. Since they had no idea from where the racket was coming, they could only guess – and they assumed that American forces had come to Israel’s rescue with Sherman Tanks.

The entire Arab army fled, leaving behind a treasure trove of artillery and thus arming the Israelis.

JACOB'S RESCUE NEAR

The Prophet's vision, glanced upon the preaching of our Lord and the apostles in Galilee, and glanced down through the Gospel age and noted how this light glinted here and there as a wonderful "lamp." Nevertheless his vision rested not until it reached the very end of this age. There in prophetic vision Isaiah seems to see the end of Jacob's trouble—Israel's deliverance from the blindness that has been upon her. They will accept the Lord as the Messiah at the time mentioned by another prophet, when the Lord would pour upon them the spirit of prayer and supplication and they should look upon Him whom they had pierced and mourn for Him (Zech.12: 10).

That time is mentioned by the Apostle Paul—when the fulness of the Gentiles having come in (the full number of the Gentiles to complete the elect number of the Church), Divine mercy shall go forth from the Church to bless the world and shall rest first of all upon Israel according to the flesh. "They shall obtain mercy through your mercy" (Rom. 11: 3).

The third and fourth verses of our lesson, we believe, are near fulfilment. In the ASV it reads, "Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased her joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. [emphasis rcb] For the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as in the day of Midian."[emphasis rcb]

The nation of Israel is much increased today. Their joy is not yet fully accomplished because this great deliverance here mentioned has not yet been accomplished. It is to be accomplished in the day of trouble. Why the reference here to their deliverance being similar to that in the day of Midian? In the days of Midian the Lord specially manifested Divine power by which Gideon and a handful with him smote an immense army and delivered Israel from the oppressor. [compare w/ above miracles - rcb] So here in the end of this age the glorified Lord and his Little Flock—the antitype of Gideon and his band—will deliver Israel with a similar mighty manifestation of Divine power.

This coming deliverance is mentioned particularly in the prophecy of Zechariah, as follows: "Behold, the day of the Lord cometh and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled and the women ravished: And half of the city shall go forth into captivity, Page 94-C2 and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the Lord go forth and fight against those nations as when he fought in the day of battle [the ancient time when the Lord worked miracles for Israel's deliverance as at Midian]. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives" (Zech. 14: 1-4).

The fifth verse seems to be more intelligently rendered in the ASV thus: "For all the armor of the armed man in the tumult, and the garments rolled in blood, shall even be for burning, for fuel of fire." The thought seems to be that at that time will come the end of warfare, as the Scriptures have declared. The Time of Trouble (which introduces the Millennium) will be the means by which the Lord shall overthrow all the powers of evil, as it is written, "He shall cause wars to cease unto the ends of the earth." Under the righteous reign which will then follow, men will learn war no more, but "will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks" (Mic. 4: 3). At the present time the reverse of all this is in operation, nor can we hope for a change such as the Lord's Word here and elsewhere predicts by any other power than that from above. Hence our prayer as our Lord instructed and in harmony with our hopes: "Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

ISAIAH 9 3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased its joy; they rejoice before thee as with joy at the harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as on the day of Mid'ian. 5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born ........

Military Developments Nowhere was progress so marked as in the military. From the raggle-taggle partisans of the Haganah, the Army for the Defense of Israel (Tzva Hahaganah le-Israel) had, within three years, grown into one of the two best military forces in the Middle East (the other being the Turkish Army). Loyalty to the democratic state was stressed in the army and party politics were played down. In July, 1950, the navy held extensive maneuvers for the first time in the eastern Mediterranean, going as far as the Turkish coast. More than 75,000 men and women—or 95.2 per cent of the regular reserves—participated in the eight-day autumn maneuvers ending on October 22, 1950. These were the first large-scale maneuvers of Israel's armed forces. The law for the mobilization of women, introduced in the Knesset in February, 1951, and the allegedly inadequate supply of kosher food in the army, were the only bones of contention in the sphere of national defense. On February 19, 1951, General Sir Brian Robertson, Commander of the British Middle East Land Forces, visited Israel in the course of a tour of the Middle East. Robertson was said to have found only three countries capable of co-operating with the West in the defense of that area: Turkey, Jordan, and Israel. Political Developments The causes of the political crisis which occurred during the period under review were, first, sharp differences of opinion over economic questions; popular impatience with the inexperienced, often inept, and occasionally overbearing officialdom; and, lastly, disagreement as to the place of religion in the state. The last factor was the immediate occasion for the cabinet crises of October, 1950, and March, 1951, which led to the dissolution of the Knesset. CABINET CRISIS Late in July, 1950, Dov Joseph, Minister of Rationing and Supply, suddenly announced that clothing and footwear would be strictly rationed owing to shortages. The public, until then grudgingly co-operative, revolted. Consumers began stocking goods and merchants rebelled. A thriving black market arose. The government countered by a campaign of arrests, appeals to the people, and by promulgating regulations which it had neither the organization nor the experience to enforce. In the midst of the confusion the Religious Bloc charged that religious ISRAEL 409 parents in the immigrant camps were being discriminated against and demanded more concessions to religious sentiment. Then on October 15, 1950, Prime Minister Ben Gurion handed in his resignation. .....

ZECHARIAH 14 COMMENTS by Regan Balman

THIS IS TABLE 1, it is from several years ago. For TABLE 2 see above.

Zec 14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

1874 – the beginning of The Thousand Year Day.

Zec 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

1948 – 7 armies* attack Israel. (Long story, but around 100,000 Jews lived in and around Jerusalem. The UN had determined it would be "internationalized", but in the end, the Jews held half the city, and Jordan the other half, and the city was divided for the first time in it's history. The arabs mistreated Jewish women, and desecrated Jewish holy sites. the Israelis ultimately built a "Burma Road' that was completed in June of 1948 and broke the siege of Jerusalem.

Zec 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

1948 Czech weapons 1956 tow missiles (from A. Haige) 1967 6 day war - retaking Jerusalem 1973 Yom Kippur

Zec 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which [is] before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, [and there shall be] a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

1948-Today The modern government of Israel is divided along liberal vs. conservative lines. "North" is Heaven, South is Earth. The conservatives believe in G-D. The liberal democrats are atheistic socialists.

Zec 14:5 And ye shall flee [to] the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, [and] all the saints with thee.

God's natural people Israel will take refuge in the comforting shadows of the prevailing governing philosophy. “Azal” meaning “Reserved” (See Strongs) – conservative

Messiah and the Martyrs will rescue Israel.

Zec 14:6 And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the light shall not be clear, [nor] dark:

That Millennial Day, after the Saints are "come." It will not be a time of happiness and certainty! Nor will it be completely evil, as the Gospel Age had at times been.

Zec 14:7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, [that] at evening time it shall be light.

The Millennial day will be a time of negative uncertainty under growing light of discovery. By the "evening" of the Millennium, people will obtain fuller understanding of the Truth, and the curse will be lifted further.

Zec 14:8 And it shall be in that day, [that] living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.

The death process stops as people learn from the earth's Capital what steps they should take. These "living waters" will be applied to the "former sea" people who are still alive at that time, and also applied to those of the "hinder sea" - those who have lived before.

Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

People will have a knowledge of the Truth, from sea to sea, and the Trinity doctrine and other such falsehoods will be done away with for true monotheism.

Zec 14:10 All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and [from] the tower of Hananeel unto the king's winepresses.

A level playing field for all. when Jerusalem rules, her gates and towers restored, which may be emblematic of aspects of her sovereignty. Details?

Zec 14:11 And [men] shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.

A promise that from this time God's protection will be over the Holy city once and for all.

Zec 14:12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

Time backs up to the previous conflict that led to peace. Some interpret this literally and say this is the result of nuclear weapons. I see it as figurative, but the details are not plain as yet.

Perhaps this: Their flesh shall "rot". This is the end of the age, after the saints or "salt" of the earth has left the scene, so there is no further preserving agent. This is a time of degenerating morals, when people are living "according to the flesh" as the Apostles say. Many live purely rotten lifestyles, even as their nation is standing tall as the earths richest ever. Their eyes are rotten? i.e. news media covering "O.J." - people watching so much TV, everything they see seems rotten, and everything they say is rotten!

Zec 14:13 And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbor, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbor.

August 15-25, 2005 Gaza Pullout "Disengagement"

(See http://www.medium.com/@OctamanRadio for more current examples of worldwide anarchy.)

Zec 14:14 And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance.

The "settler" population are those who are being dispossessed of their inherited land, and they are also those who carry the torch of Judaism for the nation. "Judah" therefore has a conflict with the then capital Jerusalem, when it was under control of leftist self-denying Jews. There is a lot of money involved, as the US, Britain, the E.U. and Russia all are paying a great deal of money to see a Palestinian State become a reality, so as to appease their arab oil providers. Also the textile industry is big in the arab world. And there has been no greater time of abundance than now in history.

Zec 14:15 And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague.

Modes of transportation will be shut down without the oil from the arab world, and that of Venezuela, who are currently plaguing the USA with threats of a boycott.

(That is a more literal take on it, please see TABLE 2 above for the spiritual types.

Zec 14:16 And it shall come to pass, [that] every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

The world will have to become Jewish.

Zec 14:17 And it shall be, [that] whoso will not come up of [all] the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.

Those who won't obey the dictates of the New Covenant will not receive the benefits from it.

Zec 14:18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that [have] no [rain]; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

Egypt is symbolic for the world.

Zec 14:19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

The entire world will be required to learn of Jewish heritage and culture and the meaning of their holy days.

Zec 14:20 In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD'S house shall be like the bowls before the altar.

Pure doctrinal notes ringing out...

Zec 14:21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.

Gone will be the leftist mentality in Israel, and the 5th column of enemies among them will no longer be there. They will be united in the Truth.

Discussing Politics in Bible Study Ecclesia: Our 1st point = Your 1st volume

Hi Friends,

Peace.

The debate over discussing politics is in Bible class is in our class as well. Is it appropriate?

I think yes - when it's in regard to the Lord's plans and purposes. Not when it's about state or national issues and our party preferences, which, we shouldn't have any [Gal 5:20]. Local, state and national laws of any nation are merely man's patchwork efforts to maintain the social order.

As Bible Students we SHOULD understand the end of the social order is necessary to clear the way for the Kingdom. I believe it is upon us.

My position is clear, that Bro. Russell predicted all we see in the news today from the Bible. It is the very Battle of Armageddon we should have studied (but sadly many classes have not), clearly described in the forward of Volume 4 titled "The Battle of Armageddon". [se http://mostholyfaith.com/Beta/bible/volumes/DFwd.asp ]

However one person in class disagrees. The sticking poing: whether or not Pastor Russell taught any such thing (that humanity would divide itself into two opposing classes, labor and capital, upper and lower, conservative vs. radical.) AND whether we're seeing anything like that now in the news.

My answer: I personally don't see how anyone who has read even the first volume and seen any news broadcast in the last 20 years could miss the obvious, that there are two opposing classes, liberal vs. conservative, and that it is as plain as seeing red earth vs. blue sky.

TO PROVE THE POINT, we simply read the first volume: here are a few excerpts which are strikingly clear.

If you don't have a first volume the link is here: http://mostholyfaith.com/Beta/bible/volumes/AFwd.asp

[A307] STUDY XV

THE DAY OF JEHOVAH

... today sees a growing opposition between the wealthy and laboring classes--a growing bitterness on the part of labor, and a growing feeling among the wealthy that nothing but the strong arm of the law will protect what they believe to be their rights. Hence, the wealthy are drawn closer to the governments; and the wage-working masses, beginning to think that laws and governments were designed to aid the wealthy and to restrain the poor, are drawn toward Communism and Anarchy, thinking that their interests would best be served thereby, and not realizing that the worst government, and the most expensive, is vastly better than no government at all. [A313]

Many scriptures clearly show that this will be the character of the trouble under which present civil, social and religious systems will pass away; that this is the way in which increase of knowledge and liberty will result, because of man's imperfection, mental, moral and physical. These scriptures will be referred to in due course; but here we can only call attention to a few of the many, advising our readers meanwhile that in many of the prophecies of the Old Testament in which Egypt, Babylon and Israel figure so largely, not only was there a literal fulfilment intended, but also a secondary and larger one. Thus, for instance, the predictions regarding the fall of Babylon, etc., must be considered extravagant beyond measure, did we not recognize a symbolic and antitypical as well as a literal Babylon. The book of Revelation contains predictions recorded long after literal Babylon was in ruins, and hence evidently applicable only to symbolic Babylon...

...Take another prophetic testimony (Zeph. 1:7-9,14-18). "The Lord hath prepared a slaughter, he hath bid his guests. [Compare Rev. 19:17.] And it shall come to pass in the day of the Lord's slaughter that I will punish the princes and the king's children, and all such as are clothed in imported clothing. And I will inflict punishment [also] on all those [marauders] who leap over the threshold on that day, who fill their masters' houses with violence and deceit. [This shows not only that there will be a great overthrow of wealth and power in this time of trouble, but that those who will for the time be the instruments of heaven in breaking down present systems will also be punished for their equally unjust and unrighteous course; for the coming [A316] trouble will involve all classes, and bring distress upon all the multitude.]

...The same events are here noted that are described under the fire symbol, namely, the sweeping away of all falsities, both from believers and from the world--errors regarding God's plan and character and Word, and also errors as to social and civil affairs in the world. It will be good indeed for all to be rid of these fabrications, which came to man largely through his own depraved desires, as well as by the cunning craftiness of Satan, the wily foe of righteousness; but it will be at great cost to all concerned that they will be swept away. It will be a terribly hot fire, a fearful storm, a dark night of trouble, which will precede the glorious brightness of that Kingdom of Righteousness which can never be shaken, that Millennial day in which the Sun of Righteousness will shine forth in splendor and power, blessing and healing the sick and dying but redeemed world. Compare Mal. 4:2 and Matt. 13:43....

The Present Situation

We here leave the prophetic statements regarding that day, to mark more particularly the present aspect of affairs in the world, as we now see them shaping themselves for the rapidly approaching conflict--a conflict which, when its terrible climax is reached, must necessarily be a short one, else the race would be exterminated. The two rival parties to this battle are already visible. Wealth, arrogance and pride are on one side, and widely-prevailing poverty, ignorance, bigotry and a keen sense of injustice are on the other. Both, impelled by selfish motives, are now organizing their forces all over the civilized world. With our eyes anointed with truth, wherever we look we can see that the sea and the waves are already roaring and lashing and foaming out against the mountains, as represented in the threats and attempts of anarchists and discontents whose numbers are constantly increasing. We can see, too, that the friction between the various factions or elements of society is rapidly getting to the point described by the prophets, when the earth (society) will be on fire, and the elements will melt and disintegrate with the mutually generated heat. ...

...An important question arises regarding the duty of the saints during this trouble, and their proper attitude toward the two opposing classes now coming into prominence. That some of the saints will still be in the flesh during at least part of this burning time seems possible. Their position in it, however, will differ from that of others, not so much in that they will be miraculously preserved (though it is distinctly promised that their bread and water shall be sure), but in the fact that, being instructed from God's Word, they will not feel the same anxiety and hopeless dread that will overspread the world. They will recognize the trouble as the preparation, according to God's plan, for blessing the whole world, and they will be cheered and comforted through it all. This is forcibly stated in Psa. 91; Isa. 33:2-14,15-24.

Thus comforted and blessed by the divine assurance, the first duty of the saints is to let the world see that in the midst of all the prevailing trouble and discontent, and even while they share the trouble and suffer under it, they are hopeful, [A339] cheerful and always rejoicing in view of the glorious outcome foretold in God's Word.

The struggle of the civilized world with SOCIALISM

“Socialism must and will degenerate into wild and ungovernable anarchy”

[R1325 : page 129]

VOL. XII. OCTOBER, 1891. NO. 10.

 VIEW FROM THE TOWER.

At the present time, as never before in the history of the world, men are studying, if not very generally practicing, the golden rule of love. They see that if it were in general operation the whole world would be greatly blessed by it. But how would it operate? How should it operate? — that is the perplexing question. One of the most popular suggestions among the masses of the people is what is commonly termed socialism. And just here we wish to introduce [R1326 : page 129] a brief article on the subject clipped from a recent issue of a secular journal. The article is as follows: —

 A QUESTION OF TO-DAY.

 SOCIALISM AND PROGRESS.

“All readers and thinkers are watching with interest the struggle of the civilized world with Socialism — a product evolved from the conditions and thoughts of the masses, peculiar to the closing years of the Nineteenth Century. In different nations it assumes different names, but all its aims and objects tend to a re-organization of society and the distribution of wealth. The masses read and think and reason something like this: ‘Well, here I am, a poor man, doomed to labor the year in and out; and, do the best I can, I am only able to pay my rent, keep body and soul together, get few luxuries and much misery, and no prospect to better my condition.

“‘What matters it to me what becomes of the princes, dukes and generals who wear fine linen and fare sumptuously every day? Let revolution come; my condition can not be any worse, and might be bettered by killing off our oppressors.’ In this frame of mind he is an easy prey to the wily agitator, and thus the ball rolls [R1326 : page 130] on, gathering force as it goes, in all the European countries.

“In the United States, only the extreme agitators are prominent, and work under the name of Anarchists, but they are few in number and are not gaining much ground. In Germany the social agitators are gaining rapidly, but there the Socialists must not be confounded with the Anarchists, for the latter have all been expelled from the Socialists’ clubs. The Socialists there really represent the progressive ideas of the nation; and, with some slight modifications, their platform is almost identical with modern republicanism. They have become so powerful in that country as to force the resignation of Bismarck.

“In Russia we have the Nihilists, who represent the advanced thought of that despotic nation; in France are the Radicals; in England the Liberals; and so on, in every nation, the social leaven is at work. The toiling millions are endowed with all the natural faculties of those who ‘toil not, neither do they spin.’

“The poor man reasons that if this world was made for man to enjoy, it is self-evident that all the enjoyment was not intended for a few individuals; that if a man inherits a fortune and title, he deserves no credit for the accident of birth, and there would be just as much reason and justice in making the rich man divide with his less fortunate neighbor as to let him spend it in riotous living or hoard it up.

“The average toiler also can not see why he should be heavily taxed to support an army of cut-throats, whose sole business was to fight for the glory of a few kings and generals, posing as figure-heads. And so the peasant comes to the conclusion that the people would be all the better off if the armies were disbanded, the titled rulers abolished, and the rich made to disgorge. A settled conviction soon becomes a duty, and the agitators who have nothing to lose and everything to gain by revolution have little difficulty in wielding the toilers in battalions and leading them to vote and work for the overthrow of the government under which they chance to live; for it is a well known fact that, in every nation, this class of people saddle all their woes upon the government, no matter what its form.

“England groans under the oppression of landlords, dukes, titles, lords, etc., and the masses see no reason why they should be taxed to support a royal house which is, at best, only a figure-head; and so social democracy grows apace.

“But while the poor man always is entitled to be heard, the question arises: Suppose property were divided equally, how long would it be before those who have it now would get it back again? The extreme Socialist says, We’ll remedy that matter by making an equal division every ten years. But if you do this you destroy the spirit of competition and the desire for improvement, and with all the human aspirations put under this sort of a ban, man would relapse into a semi-savage state, and all law and order be hurled into chaos. To share equally in property unequally earned is contrary to all political economy. The best thing for a man to do is to do the best he can under the circumstances.

“To abolish law and order would put every poor man at the mercy of the desperado and the cut-throat: and, with no one to see after the welfare of society, everything would go to eternal smash.

“If the people would devote their intelligence and energy to the reforming of existing institutions and give the agitators a wide berth, much of the existing evil might be ameliorated.

“Communistic Democracies all end in social chaos, and promiscuous socialism means social anarchy.

“Germany is so situated that a strong centralized government will always be necessary for self-protection.

“With Russia on the east with her barbaric millions, and a half million soldiers who are veritable heathen, and France on the west with her desire for revenge, the Kaiser’s country must always be on the alert and ready to defend herself. France is more favorably situated, and, if the conservative element keeps the ascendency, may continue a moderate Republic. England will never be what she ought to be, until the masses own the soil. Great reforms are necessary in all the nations, and can only be brought about by reforming existing institutions, and not by adopting the views and impracticable theories of the socialistic agitators.”

Here is some sound logic, and some not so sound. The reforming of existing institutions, for instance, would be a hopeless task. The fact is, they are so imperfect that nothing but revolution will reform them. And such a revolution, we are forewarned, is coming; the signs of the times also clearly indicate its rapid approach; and the outcome of that revolution will be the utter wreck of existing institutions — civil, social and ecclesiastical.

But what of socialism? will it survive the world-wide wreck and bring men to a realization of their common brotherhood and to the actual practice of the law of love? No: socialism, however moderate its principles and course in the beginning, must and will degenerate into [R1326 : page 131] wild and ungovernable anarchy, which, as this writer claims, places every man at the mercy of the desperado and the cut-throat. The writer truly claims that, “To share equally in property unequally earned is contrary to all political economy.” Why? Because it would crush out individuality and enterprise, and rob the worthy individual of his just need of credit and remuneration, and encourage the unworthy in a shiftless and ignoble dependence. The general tendency of such a course, it is easily seen, would be toward national, as well as individual, imbecility. Any system of political economy which would subordinate the individual to community interests is imperfect and unjust; for the individual has rights, as well as the nation, and the real interests of the nation can only be properly considered as the accumulated rights and interests of every individual of the nation.

When the Kingdom of God, which is to displace all present institutions, is set up, it will have respect, not only to national or community interest, but to every legitimate individual interest as well. At first, in the great time of trouble, there will be a great and very necessary leveling process; for the pride of man must be humbled and his dependence upon God must be realized before he can be exalted to the true dignity of manhood. That the individual right of property will be respected is manifest from the promise that “they shall build houses and inhabit them, and they shall plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat…and they shall long enjoy the work of their hands.” — Isa. 65:21,22.
